Black Sisters by Catching-Smoke Black Sisters by Catching-Smoke
A celebratory doodle since I've submitted all my year projects for assessment!

It's of Andromeda Tonks (Née Black) and Narcissa Malfoy (Née Black) and baby Teddy.

I am really fascinated by the Black sisters. Each one of them took a different life-path and each one of them has completely differing personalities. I'm intrigued as to whether Narcissa would attempt to contact her estranged sister after the Battle of Hogwarts. I think she would.
Narcissa and Draco Malfoy dont seem to me like evil types, and neither does Lucius if I'm honest. What they are is rather selfish, prideful cowards, therefore they take the any route that will ensure their own survival. Although I believe Lucius is the worst of the three, I think Narcissa and Draco are just scared.
Generalising from a psychologist point of view, it is all about our 'fight or flight' response, the large majority of us will choose 'flight', which is exactly what Narcissa seems to have done through her life, whereas Andromeda chose 'fight'. The problem is once we use a certain response a lot of us will continue to go back to that same response over and over and it becomes habitual and safe.

Why am I rambling about this? Because I like to think that after the war, once Bellatrix is dead and Harry has won, Narcissa re-evaluates what is important and at least tries to make some kind of amends with her sister.
Especially now that her sister Andromeda has lost her husband, only daughter and son-in-law and now has to raise baby Teddy (with help from his godfather).

It's what I like to believe anyway...

I don't know why I've written all this, I think I'm a little delirious from lack of sleep, I've been awake and working non-stop for over 30 hours...

I love Andromeda.

NB I know they don't look their ages, I tried but they looked weird so I made them forever young :aww:

yes...but Adromeda Black was mother to Nymphadora Tonks...who has Teddy then. Plus, during the battle, Tonks is killed by her aunt Bellatrix. .-. Good art, though.

I love Narcissa! She truly cherishes the ones she loves. If you read DH, when Voldemort orders Narcissa to check if Harry's dead, she knows he's alive. But she asked if Draco, her son was alive and back at Hogwarts. Harry said yes, and Narcissa told the Death Eaters and Voldemort that Harry was dead. So she's not really evil.

I love the passion and emotion of this picture. Andromeda, holding little Ted, shouting at Narcissa that it's too late. She's already lost her husband, daughter, and son-in-law. And Narcissa tries to make amends. My heart has broken!

The point is that this is after the Battle of Hogwarts imagining that Narcissa would look up Andromeda, who would by this time be looking after Teddy

This is so lovely. I, too, am fascinated by the relationship that is the black sisters. As you mentioned, they each chose different paths, different ideologies. I think that all three of them are extremely complex in different ways, and are one of the best dynamics within the Harry Potter series. You've really done this relationship justice, so I really praise you for that. :)

Yeah, I have to agree with you. I don't like Narcissa, but I do think that she would feel bad for her sister and try to make amends with her

I believe in Cissy and Andy reconciling as well. I don't really think that Narcissa or Draco where ever truly bad people. they just were raised to think whats wrong is right.

I really like your concept about their relationship, and it doesn"t really matter they look younger than they should be, the emotions are well portrayed here.
I love Andromeda too. She must be an amazing person.

lol yes they did look rater young but i like it all the same. and i COMPLETELY agree with your comments/analysis. i feel the same way about the Malfoys. as fro Andromeda, i think she accidentally fell in love with Ted. Ted, i believe, was the fighter and she just had to o along with it, especially once the second war started. it was either "flight" and lose everything or "fight" and have a chance at keeping ever- or something. well done!

I think Cissy did reach out to Andromeda after the battle. I think its because Narcissa is just a little too weak to function without guidance from an older sister.

BAH to making them look older! Age is relative isn't it? And don't wizards and witches age slower than us Muggles, anyway? I agree with the Malfoy assessment, and with another user who talked about them, too. I read a lot of fanfic (drarry shipper), and I love the ones where the sisters come in to play. It makes it more real to me. Thanks for drawing this lovely picture.

Yeh they should be I know. I had a go but I think with how small the actual drawing is and also my ineptness (haha) it didn't work out so I gave up on aging them. I'm going to draw them again as their proper ages though :aww:

Their expressions are perfect.
It's like Narcissa is asking for for forgivness, but Andromeda is having a hard time doing that. I totally agree with you about their story.
Narcissa was just someone looking for safety, she didn't realize how deeply rooted she would be into all that Death Eater stuff.
And she was too proud and scared to admit she was wrong.

Teddy's so cute in this picture :)

I've never thought about this, but it seems quite possible. Also, I'd like to add that in the case of the Malfoys, there's a certain degree of pride involved: they have supported a wrong cause for a long time, but I don't think they'll admit this freely. They have been proven wrong before the whole magical community, and at the end of the battle, it seemed as if they had been ridiculized in a way. It hit them right in their Malfoy pride, so I guess at first they'll be reluctant to admit their mistakes, but after a while, I'm sure they'll come to terms with the rest of the magical world.

About your drawing, I love the intensity of the stare, and the tension between them. And poor little Teddy over there barely has any idea of what is going on around him :D

I love the Black sisters for the very same reasons, especially Andromeda. She's such a minor character with such a HUGE backstory and history that most people don't think about. She's such an amazing character that I'd love to learn more about.
I like to think that she reconnected with Narcissa again. Both Narcissa and Draco (Draco especially) were caught up in something that couldn't really get out of... Adding to Andromeda's interesting history, she was caught up in it all too but managed to escape in her own way...
Just another reason why I love JKR, she gives even the smallest of characters such a great history.

I always wondered why Andromeda was in Slytherin :S She was so nice and even married a muggle?

Well sure enough most Slytherins we know are very different from Andromeda but that doesn't mean that she didn't belong there and more importantly I don't think ALL Slytherins are automatically bad people. It's just that the bad examples (as always) strike out.
Anyway the character traits attributed to Slytherins are not all bad and though Slytherins might tend to be cowards, weighing in possible outcomes before running into any adventure seems more sensible to me.
From HP Wiki:
Slytherins tend to be ambitious, shrewd, cunning, strong leaders, and achievement-oriented. They also have highly developed senses of self-preservation. This means that Slytherins tend to hesitate before acting, so as to weigh all possible outcomes before deciding exactly what should be done.

She married a muggleborn wizard named Ted Tonks and was therefore disowned by her family, but was in Slytherin yeh, I suppose it's because it's not the house that makes the person evil it's a personal choice.

That's a funny coincidence because I was just rereading my favorite fanfic "After the Flaw" where Narcissa actually contacts her sister and they - somehow awkwardly - revive their sisterly bond. I can only recommend this fanfic btw, it's very in-character and it describes the events between the end of the seventh book and the Epilogue.
Your picture is very pretty and you did awesome jobs on their facial expressions. Keep up in a good work!
